11:12 am - Socks, and even more tank musings Look what the knitting floon has done! Motivation to take photos of the socks I've finished recently. And since I realize I haven't blogged about anything since last June, some other socks, too!
( Socks, socks, socks for my feet, with lots of pictures )
And more on the tank top saga...
( More patterns, as if I needed more )

11:07 am - It's hot, so there must be knitting Ahoy, there. I know it's been a while since I posted. Not that I haven't been knitting, but I've come to terms with the fact that I'm not a knit blogger. Most of what updates I have been making have been going onto Ravelry (User: alix), but that's just project notes and photos when I can get around to taking them.
However, I started writing a 'real' blog post about my evening last night, realized it was mostly knit content that most of my friends list wouldn't give a crap about and thought 'you know...I have a blog for that purpose'. So here I am. :)
( Knitting obsession: high, along with the temperature )
Maybe posting here will get me off my arse to photograph my recently completed socks, especially since, as far as I know, none exist out there as yet for nathaniaapple's Stained Glass Socks....

11:43 am - Breaking radio silence with actual content: Everything Else I haven't just been doing socks, it's just that socks are easier to knit and finish. Here's everything else I've been working on, some of which are actually done.
(Again, some of this is copy-and-pasted out of my Ravelry notes.)

04:10 pm - Breaking radio silence with actual content: Socks First off, if you haven't read it yet, go read Franklin Habit's "A Reminder for All of Us". It really resonated with me, especially today, as I've been feeling very vaguely out of sorts and out of place, but with friends feeling even more like what he describes. It touched me, and I want to share.
That wasn't what I was going to post about, though. I was going to post a 'hellooooo', and I know it's been forever since I posted (four months!) but there hasn't been much to report. I've come to grips recently with the fact that my desire to knit far outstrips my capacity to do so, so although I want to be working on about ten different projects right now, I can feasibly only work on two at a time (although I consider myself at four right now. No one said I was 100% logical).
But! One of the things that had been preventing me from posting was that I'd been dilly-dallying about uploading photos. I don't know why this seems like such an AWESOME CHORE to me, but it usually does (right up until the time I do it. And then I remember that it's not. Then promptly forget again.)
What I have for you today is part one of two of "What I've been up to since last I posted": the Sock Edition.
(Some of this is copy-and-pasted out of my Ravelry notes. Unlike some crafters, I'm not going to expect everyone has a Ravelry account, though. :)

10:34 am - Personal bookmark, and sharing! From a link found on wendyknits:
Tutorial on making knitting graph paper with Excel
This is timely for me. I've been sucked into the vortex of quick-and-easy knit projects (read: instant gratification, or as close to it as knitters can get) and knitting out of my stash, by spooling off sets of cabled fingerless mitts out of aran yarn.
First one I did was Slumberland's Warm Braid Cable Wristwarmers, from two strands of Mountain Colors Mountain Goat in the Rosehip colorway leftover from my Mountain Colors Elegant Textured Shawl (which I'm not sure I ever posted the picture of):
( Warm Braid Cable Wristwarmers Photos )
So jazzed up from the quick turnaround (I finished them in a weekend), I launched myself into a series of mitts based on Michelle Szeghalmi's Evangeline, knit from some Rowan Cashshoft Aran I had previously bought for a scarf I'm not going to make now. 8) I've done a set 95% faithful to the original pattern, and two since then changing it up because I didn't quite like how the first (or second) one came out.
But while I was knitting the second set, I started getting ideas of introducing fair isle into the cabling, then creating my own cabling pattern for it, and...well, I may have gone temporarily insane, because it would probably need to be done in fingering weight and would be anything but a quick knit.
Except I knew I needed knit graph paper if I was going to do it. :)

06:03 pm - What a little Ravelry will get ya... Photos. As in, spent a good chunk of the afternoon (in between a minor re-org of the craft stash area) taking photos of my latest yarn acquisitions and WIPs, and getting them uploaded to Flickr and from there, to Ravelry.

And then the WIPs

11:12 pm - Finished Xmas 2005 Project #2, and Book!Ravenclaw status I'm in a hurry to get to bed, but before I leave for the wintery wastes, some pictures!
Xmas 2005 Project #2: The cross-stitch "Source of Strength": Finished, framed, no flash Finished, framed, no flash
It may look a little funny because it was wrapped in a thick sheet of protective plastic that I didn't want to remove.
And the status of the PoA earwarmer/gloves/scarf set:
Book!Ravenclaw PoA-inspired Earwarmer - Completed and blocked
Book!Ravenclaw PoA-inspired Glove #1 - Completed and inside-out
And the second glove is half a thumb from being done.
Off to bed! Merry Christmas or Happy Hannukah, Solstice, or Kwanzaa to you all!

09:12 am - A flurry of updates, Redux [pics] A re-post from yesterday, with pictures!
* Secret Pal 6 - Yay, reveal! I got my last package from my gifter, plath_blogspot (aka sassafraslisa), on Saturday. From memory, there were two skeins of Koigu KPPPM in two different colorways, one skein of Jaeger Zephyr Wool-Silk in a light sage, a skein of some dark sage laceweight yarn which I suspect is also Zephyr (which sassafraslisa confirmed is the case), a small pouch which I initially thought was a sachet but realized after taking photos included several beaded stitch markers, a small notebook with a pen, a kit to knit a beaded necklace (on 0000 needles! Eek!), several different sampler teas (including a box from Adagio, which amused me greatly given how big a fan Ezzy and purls_beyond are of that company :), and my favorite of all, a canvas pencil case with an image of Grommit knitting printed on it. (Plus, three Tootsie Pops) Thank you!
( Secret Pal gift porn )
* Book!Ravenclaw earwarmer/scarf/gloves set: The Xmas Project has, rightfully so, sucked up most of my time, but I have gotten some further work done on the earwarmer thanks to the hockey games. Past the halfway point, probably about a third of the way through the second half, and with nearing completion on XP #3, I should be able to devote full attention to these over the next week.
( The progress pics )
Note: The odd looking line in the earwarmer running horizontally between the 'middle' band of orange and the one at the top is the row of purl stitches I did marking the edge where it will be folded in half.
* Beading - My info doesn't lie, and I justified my claim of "dabbling in jewelry making" this weekend, as I got a couple of bugs up my butt due to a confluence of a couple of gifts given last week, one to me and one to Ezzy. One of them I can't speak openly about here as the end-result are more Christmas gifts (Xmas 2005 Project #4), but the other one was satisfying an itch I've had for a while to make my own beaded stitch markers.
I, uh, went a little crazy, and I think I wound up making 20 for myself, total. :) So, there was irony finding the ones from my Secret Pal gifter after that little insanity. :) But, the Secret Pal ones were also nice because they were constructed slightly differently, giving me an idea of how to make more which are even smaller gauge than the ones I made.
( The ones I made for me and the ones from my Secret Pal )
The ones I made were easy to put together: I purchased several small and large ring-and-bar necklace clasps--the kind where you fasten it by putting the bar perpindicularly through the hole of the ring, then rotate it 90-degrees to 'lock' it into place--and discarded the bar part of the fastener. The beads were then threaded onto a jewelry head pin, the head pin cut to the proper length, then fastened to the loop of the ring-clasp intended to connect to a chain by bending the end of the head pin into a circle around the loop using two jewelry pliers (I use one rounded needle nose for shaping and a blunt-tipped to do the bending).

01:45 pm - Drive-by photography! [pics] Hey, look, it's a scarf!
( beginnings of the PoA book!Ravenclaw scarf )
If I'd been smart (which I wasn't last night), I would've also taken pics of the Viking Knitting book and my Combined Intarsia/Fair Isle project, although my excuse for both is that I didn't think about it until after I'd put my camera away for the night. And the latter should really be blocked first, too. :)

10:16 am - [pics] Hah! Photos! For some reason my webhost righted itself and not only let me upload new, undoctored pictures I took last night but also some of the ones I took last month that it was barfing on before, so hey, look, content, and lots of it!
The first of three posts today, this is the public stuff I don't mind sharing, followed by locked posts for the Christmas stuff.
First, the yarn porn. Oooo, yarn porn.
First, I will finally publically thank my Secret Pal for the yarn she sent me back in October:
( Secret Pal #6 Package #1 )
I think the Fantasy in particular is going to make some cool socks, and I can't wait to get through my Christmas projects so I can start knitting socks for me again!
(This part cross-posted to secretpalsix) --- And as if there isn't enough sock yarn in the world, this is the hand-painted sock yarn in the Chocolate Cherry colorway I brokedown and bought a couple weeks ago at commuKNITy:
( Chocolate *and* cherries ) --- And then there was the Elann.com 'accident' last week. There must be more fingerless gloves in my future, because I got this lovely stuff, an 60% Alpaca/30% Merino/10% Cashmere blend:
( And it feels better than it looks )
And because I am a sucker for it, and aelfsciene is easy to make for ;) --
( Teal teal teal ) ---- But, it's not all about the yarn. I'm actually doing stuff with it, too.
Curious about the results of my classes? I just now realized I didn't take a picture of the partial project from the Shetland Lace class, but I did get examples of the other two.
( Wanna see a really ugly stash project? )
So, yeah. The class called for four different colors of DK yarn, so I did a stash dig and pulled out a bunch of solid-colored DK I had leftover from sock projects a couple years ago. Tomato red and bright teal. Oy. :)
And then for the Fair Isle class, we used two colors of worsted weight yarn, but I found a much better color combo again out of my stash for that. aberdeen might recognize the colors :)
( Not that bad, if I do say so myself )
Don't adjust your screen; the bottom set of checker squares really is skewed in that picture, because I miscounted making one square on the first pattern row and of course therefore phase-shifted the entire first row out of alignment. Since this was just practice, I just went on in-pattern as written rather than accomodating the mistake or trying to fix it.
Still, I think it came out pretty good.
(Also, the upcoming class tomorrow for combined Intarsia and Fair Isle also called for four different colors of DK yarn, but I decided, this time around, to purchase a skein of lovely grey Debbie Bliss DK Merino to go with the teal, black, and white, instead of the red from before. Sharks colors! :) --- Lastly, here's the test swatch for the Book!Ravenclaw hat/scarf/glove set that I want to make for myself that I keep whining on and on about:
( Swatchie! )
It's done in a k1p1 rib that's been wet-blocked but not stretched out to dry, because I actually want the fabric to have that tight, stockinette-like look to it. Because of that and the size of needles I used (US:3's or 4's, I think), I got 6-6.5 sts/inch instead of the yarn recommended 5.5 sts/inch, as previously mentioned.

09:47 am - [pics] Gotta catch 'em all I'll admit it. Adult that I am, when Pokemon first was wildly popular, I was a fan. And the catch phrase has become a catch all for me anytime I am in a 'collect the whole set' mode.
As I am, pleased as punch, with the completion of the four Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban-style Hogwarts' house scarves:
( PoA Scarves--Four schools )
In checking snail mail yesterday, I found a copy of the new Patternworks catalog, which I'd already seen thanks to Ezzy, but was also greeted with the semi-horrifying cover of the Lion Brand catalog, trumpeting 'Fur for Everyone', along with a couple of hideous examples of Fun Fur knitting. Which just goes to show how far I've grown out of the novelty yarn phase. I am not hip. I am not funky. I am not nouveau. Give me classic designs that will stand the test of time, in natural fibers. I am Taurus, see me be earthy.
Yesterday's accomplishments, in addition to getting the Slytherin pics uploaded, was a bit of work on Xmas #2005 Project #2: Revenge of 2004 Project #2, and to re-organize my crafting pictures in my gallery. What I didn't realize, but should have, is that in doing the picture re-org, I broke all the links to pictures I've posted to this journal. So, right now at least, the majority of the links are broken, until I get around to going back in and fixing them. But the main Crafts page link is still good to navigate through everything.

10:41 pm - [pics] Parting shot Before I trek off into the wilds known as 'lack of access', I wanted to share pictures of the finished Peacock Feathers shawl and the progess pictures of the PoA Slytherin scarf (the latter just for moonlightnrain, who sounds like she was having a rotten, no-good, very bad day today).

05:47 am - [pics] At long last! I finished the PoA Hufflepuff scarf! I finished the PoA Hufflepuff scarf! W00t! W00t! W00t!
Ahem. I feel better now. :)
With that completion, it also cattle-prodded me into finally uploading the pictures I'd taken of Peacock Feathers after the completion of Chart 6 and Chart 7, and the incidental pictures I took of the Alpaca Cloud--Tidepool when it came in, to pictorially document how the color differs in reality from the shot of it at the KnitPicks site.
So without further ado...
( PoA Scarf )
No pictures of the latest scarf with Toast, as it was hot yesterday (first time in a few weeks), and Toast was off elsewhere in the house when I was taking pictures. And then Peacock Feathers, which I finished two more rows of on the edging although it is not yet depicted in the pics...
( The pattern is really 'popping' now... ) And lastly, the yarn porn:
( Tidepool, four ways )
I also cast-on for the PoA Slytherin scarf and got a whole row in, but as that's not an exciting picture as yet, that simply gets verbal mention. :) Oh, and I created a new knitblog feed, fuzzylogicknits.

07:31 am - [pics] Get 'em while it lasts As previously noted, work continues apace on the PoA Hufflepuff scarf. Whee. :) I'm really liking the color I wound up with for the gold, after all.
( The progress of a Hufflepuff, Very Tall Socks, and the requisite cat pics ) I did make it down to CommuKnity after work and they did have a 32" US:5 AddiNaturas (although no 16" US:2s of any needle brand, which I'd considered picking up to work on the Very Tall Socks rather than juggling 100+ stitches on DPNs), so before I moved the shawl over from a 52" cord to a 32" cord, I thought I'd get one more photo shoot of the shawl full spread out to show off the pattern.
( Have some more feathers )
The last picture was included because although the pattern definition is not as good, the color is more accurate in the non-flash photos.
Ironically, in doing so I discovered that I had just about hit the limit of the 52" cord as well to spread the shawl out. Any more rows, and I would've either had to have started to bunch it up, anyway, or join in another cord to be able to get it fully unfurled.
I then knit the work onto the Naturas, and discovered something about these particular needles which hadn't been apparent doing the gauge swatch using the US:3's: I'm having new and different issues with the join than I did the Denise's( ... )

06:55 am - [pics] All the news that's fit to print With the arrival of the latest and greatest shipment of yarn, the cattle prod of being behind my self-imposed schedule, and the assistance of an hour and a half of meetings at work yesterday that I could knit at, I did, in fact, manage to "catch up" completely on the next PoA scarf in the queue. Go me.
And look, peektures!
( Yarn porn for HP knitting items )
( Two down, one WIP, and the latest bookmark scarf ) Since I was busy trying to catch-up on the Hufflepuff scarf, I only got two rows (one pattern row) of the Peacock Feathers Shawl completed last night, but I did take pictures, as it's been a while. Per a comment discussion with ashcake, I also took a couple of close-up shots to try to show what a lifeline looks like in knitting.

07:36 am - [pics] A slight difference in scale... I'm once again about a day ahead of schedule on the Gryffindor scarf, but this time intentionally. I have enough yarn to get a couple days into the Hufflepuff scarf, so I'm hoping I might start it early if I get done with the Gryffindor one early...

08:29 am - [pics] Swatching and beginning So after several days of trials getting a gauge swatch which matched the pattern gauge, I was finally able to start the shawl itself. Which was fortuitous, as the three of us who decided to do this in knit-a-long style were all ready at roughly the same time. :)
Here is the pictorial journey so far...
