09:18 am - AWOL
I'm close to finishing up some projects: the Leyburn socks (my version), a small size Tulip Sweater, and I did finish the Ribby Shell (my version) I was working on, so what happens?

My camera, which I intended to take photos with this weekend, went AWOL. Missing. Gone. *Poof*.

So, they're really pretty, and maybe I'll get to post photos of them someday. Maybe this is just what I needed to get an upgrade on my ancient 4 megapixel camera.

Besides, you didn't really want to see pictures of my WIP, which are the Shaped Triangle Shawl in Fiber Fiend's Silk Laceweight in a variegated colorway called 'Mother Earth' (reds, browns, and greens) (because we all know unblocked lace looks like a pile of speghetti noodles) and Sahara in plain, unadorned cream.

11:43 am - Breaking radio silence with actual content: Everything Else
I haven't just been doing socks, it's just that socks are easier to knit and finish. Here's everything else I've been working on, some of which are actually done.

(Again, some of this is copy-and-pasted out of my Ravelry notes.)

04:12 pm - I dream of Jeanie
(I wish I could claim the cleverness for the subject line...but that would belong to [info]purls_beyond)

I am in serious, *serious* project crush.

Jeanie

The Winter 2007 Knitty just came out yesterday. Soon as I saw the pictures, I fell. Hard.

I'm not the only one, though. I added it to the Ravelry pattern database yesterday morning. This afternoon:
3 projects, in 816 queues
Baaaa, I say.

Must resist buying yarn...must resist buying yarn...*cries*

06:03 pm - What a little Ravelry will get ya...
Photos. As in, spent a good chunk of the afternoon (in between a minor re-org of the craft stash area) taking photos of my latest yarn acquisitions and WIPs, and getting them uploaded to Flickr and from there, to Ravelry.

03:32 pm - This thing still on?
Yep, I guess it is. :)

Just a quick pop in to say I'm still here and I am still knitting. Is anyone surprised there are no photos (yet)? And I came to realize that photos are what make a knit blog. Something to ponder.

Posting to say I've join the herd, and I'm on Ravelry: username is 'alix' (my preferred nom du Net, and surprisingly it was available!)

What I've been working on:
  • I've finished the toe-up Jaywalker socks I mentioned in my post a couple months ago, done in the Claudia Handpainted Sharks colorway (top)

  • I've started a pair of Pomatomus socks in the same yarn. One sock done, and a couple inches in to sock #2.

  • Still occasionally plinking away at the Ribby Shell. It's several inches of black almost-stockinette stitch, even if I took photos, you wouldn't see any changes in it. :)

  • The Mountain Colors Elegant Textured Shawl, in that colorway in fact, although my reds are a lot deeper than the picture. After months of doing socks in fingering weight yarn and 260 stitch rows of DK and let's please not forget lace on what is almost silk thread, I was craving a project that would knit up quickly in big yarns and even bigger needles. I've been lusting after that kit since Purlescence got it in last January, and with a sudden cold snap hitting the area earlier this month, it was time to do it. The pattern is a mindless double-row garter stitch (P-K-K-P) and knits up hella quick.

More on this later once I finish it, which should be no later than this weekend. :)

03:55 pm - In lieu of anything pretty...
I never did get the post I intended to make posted.

But, to save my other friends from my crafting natterings....

I mentioned in my last post having four potential projects to start: the Faroese-style lace shawl out of Blue Moon Silk Thread in Spinel, a highly modified (but simpler) version of the Tiger Swallowtail Shawl out of Angora Cottage 100% handpainted silk yarn in Night Dreams, Bambuzzled in Blue Moon Bambu in Sea Breeze and the Ribby Shell in Cascade Pima Tencel (black and teal).

I wound up doing the Bambuzzled first. Project comments )

I also did start the second 2007 RSC sock, cut in case people are still avoiding 'spoilers' )

    Miscellany:

I've also cast-on for the Ribby Shell, which is currently my mindless "don't want to think while I knit" pattern at the moment. I love the feel of the Cascade Pima Tencel while I'm working. I'm roughly 4" into the body so far.

...and the Faroese-style shawl is on needles as of yesterday. I decided I needed something mildly challenging after all the repetitious stuff the last couple of months. I love Addi Lace needles, which I'm using a pair of for this project.

Lastly, I actually finished something else in the past month, a PoA-style Hufflepuff sweater Read more... )

07:21 pm - Because I'm insane, but in an evil genius kind of way
I finished up the Pacific Northwest Shawl.

But that's not why I'm insane.

I'm insane because although I haven't yet blocked it, I've been struck with new inspiration for lace.

03:26 pm - Woeful and behind
And probably the least interesting craft blog, ever. Has it really been 2 months since I last posted? Sheesh! I guess that's a testament to how little crafting I'm actually doing lately.

However, because I *have* been doing some...

I finished my father's socks. There's a funny story associated with this. Story and actual picture of an actual FO! )

What's been eating my head recently, though, has been Fiber Trends' Pacific Northwest Shawl, a shawl that [info]kightp did a while ago, now, which made me enamored of it. I bought the pattern and the yarn, KnitPicks' Alpaca Cloud in Tidepool, last year, but put it aside in favor of Christmas gifts. Then came the great crash'n'burn of Spring 2006, and lace was the *last* thing in the world I wanted to work on.

    Until suddenly, it was.

I cast on for it on October 14th, that day in Purlescence (described under the cut above) when I couldn't work on the socks immediately, and have been making steady progress since. It was my project on the long plane flights to and from Florida a couple weeks ago. I've been working on it more regularly than just about any project since the crash'n'burn.

Of course, there's a funny story associated with *it*, too. More anecdote & crappy lace pictures! )

I love lace. Someone on [info]knitting did the Swallowtail Butterfly shawl pattern recently, the same pattern I bought at Stitches West this past year, and it's made me want to pull that out to start once the PNW is done. Lace lace lace.

(Next up: the yarn that has fallen into my stash over the last month and the requiste cat pictures for [info]ashcake--which I forgot to upload last night because I'm a moron.)

02:20 pm - Once again, I blame Ezzy
A pattern link for the Print O' The Wave Stole, and it's also Ezzy's fault for making me think that this might be a good use for the two skeins of KnitPicks Shadow in Lost Lake that I got from [info]plath_blogspot during SP6.

    *grumble* :)

11:49 am - The wild and elusive Tersa
I haven't posted since that rare weekend sighting on Saturday, not because I haven't been doing anything crafty, but because I've entered a stage of time and projects where it's not really exciting to talk about them. :) So, I may drop down to only one or two posts a week for a while.

The Shetland Lace class is still ongoing, so I'll reserve the bulk of my reactions to that until after the second and final session Saturday afternoon. It has, so far, been interesting, learning the history of what is Shetland Lace. What was not so welcome was the homework requested of us, as I was already beginning to feel mildly overwhelmed by the number of projects on my plate to be done by Christmas.

Still, thanks to a scheduled three-day weekend and not a small amount of pure stubborness, I got through the homework, and last night returned to work on Xmas 2005 Project #1.

Also, I found out this week that my financial future is preserved for at least some amount of time, to which I breathe a sigh of relief. It will likely not immediately impact my plans, as I feel like my crafting materials have me booked solid until the New Year, but who knows after that? :)

My KnitPicks order should hopefully arrive tomorrow. Which, at this point, simply means turning around to send off part of it to my Secret Pal, then finding a temporary home for the rest of the stash haul.

    11:55 am - Oh, right!
    I am teh dum.

The main reason I specifically had wanted to post today was to note that I am taking the first of two lessons for a Shetland Lace class tomorrow at commuKNITy. I'm looking forward to this. :)

09:51 am - Random addendum to my previous post
I ordered color cards from Halcyon Yarns a couple weeks ago for their Gemstone silk and Casco Bay (? I'm too lazy right now to go verify that's the correct branding) yarn lines, which came in the mail and appeared on my dining room table on Friday.

Let me just say that I understand [info]kightp's lust for the purplicious Gemstone yarn she's making her Peacock Feathers Shawl out of. It's gorgeous. And they do, in fact, have a black, a very gorgeous black, which means the very theoretical idea of making the Twin Peaks Faroese Shawl from it is a go, if I ever get around to it.

Less impressive were the Casco Bay colors, which make the Newport Linen yarn I was considering making the Irish Diamond Shawl from. Although they have several greens, the shades go from a medium green which is brighter than I like immediately to a green so dark it is just shy of black. What I was hoping to get was something in between, so I'm going to have to ponder whether I want to go with the really dark green after all, pick a color other than green to do the linen, or a completely different yarn (one alternative thought: doing it in the Gemstone silk, if there's an appropriate color I like).

09:03 am - A mind entangled by lace
I am nearing the end of Chart 7 of Peacock Feathers, and my brain is already leaping ahead in bounds to all the other lace projects I can and want to do.

I spent part of my time at home sick yesterday making a spreadsheet of patterns I have access to, or actively want, with their recommended yarns to make a reference guide to figure out a yds/oz (m/g), fiber, and cost per unit; and where possible, how much it would cost to make it with the pattern recommended yarn. I then made another page with a similar breakdown for all the KnitPicks yarns, a few of the Halcyon yarns, and Jaeger Zephyr Wool-Silk. This way, I can check yarn requirements for each project on the fly, and do a comparison with other yarns that I'd prefer buying to see if they might be substitutable.

I realize I'm obsessing about this. I also realize that by the time I get to the point of being able to do them, the obsession may have passed--much like my whirlwind collection of Mirabilia patterns a couple years ago.

    However, here's where I'm at:

    In Progress
Peacock Feathers Shawl (Fiddlesticks) -In Ruby Jaeger Zephyr Wool-Silk

    Actively in the pipes
Pacific Northwest Shawl (Fibertrends) - In Tidepool KnitPicks Alpaca Cloud
A Christmas gift in Iris KnitPicks Alpaca Cloud

Will Do At Some Point (aka, Oh Yes, You Will Be Mine)
Irish Diamond Shawl (Folk Shawls) - In a vivid green Newport 16/2 Linen
Tempelhof Airlifter (Hazel Carter)- In Jaeger Zephyr Wool-Silk, color undecided (leaning towards copper or possibly a sapphire blue)
    Another Christmas Gift

Ones I would like to do but will not overly cry if I don't (in order of likelihood)
Twin Peaks Faroese Shawl (KnitPicks) - In black Halcyon Gemstone 2/12 (if they have black) or Halcyon 5/2 Pearl Cotton (if they don't)
Forest Path Stole (IK Summer 2003) - Once again in Alpaca Cloud, color undecided (leaning towards Iris--i.e., lavender Sand or Stream)
Legends of the Shetland Seas (Hazel Carter) - In the recommended cream-colored Blackberry Ridge Thisteldown 100% wool yarn
    Another gift

Except for the gifts, obviously, these would be for me, and would give me a nice range of my usual color palettes (predominately jewel tones with a black and a white) and fiber (wool, wool/silk, alpaca, silk, and linen). This would also probably keep me busy for the next year or so, and doesn't include at least three sweaters I would like to make, a winter-wear set for me to wear when I go home for Christmases which would be warmer than the hat-and-scarf I made for myself last year, or my cross-stitch.

And of course, mind subject to change with no warning whatsoever.

    Glug.

06:57 am - Sky High Tide
Continuing with the serious floon, but I am glad that my window shopping is just that, as I'm finding in practice that it's much like the phrase "throwing things at the wall and seeing what sticks". What I am enamored of one day may not last until the next, and I can come back to my posts later and decide what I still want to do.

That said: I'm still pretty enamored of the Tempelhof Airlifter and Legends of the Shetland Seas shawls. :)

I added it to it this weekend when my KnitPicks order came in, and I lovingly paged through Cheryl Oberle's Folk Shawls. Unsurprisingly, I've fallen in love with many of the shawls Wendy Johnson ([info]wendyknits) has done, especially the Irish Diamond Shawl which is in this book, and toying with the idea of making it out of Halcyon Newport 16/2 Linen laceweight yarn in, yes of course, dark green (and for my notes, I also really want to find a pattern to use Halcyon's 2/12 Gemstone Silk laceweight for, because of [info]kightp's lovely picutres of her Peacock Feathers in it). There's a very simple square shawl in the back of the Folk Shawls book, I think called 'Black Square' that I think would be an excellent pattern to show off the beautiful color changes of the KnitPicks Gossamer yarn; after a discussion with [info]wazsgirl in comments about how the Twin Peaks Faroese pattern gets lost in the varigation, I'm thinking that something simple would be better if I wanted to do it. And now I'm quite stupidly considering making that shawl out of the Gossamer as a Christmas present.

With the KnitPicks order coming in, it means I also got my color cards, which I proceeded to pet quite a bit, and the KnitPicks Alpaca Cloud in Tidepool. First thing I noticed was how the color was a lot more green than the picture seemed to make it out to be, although that's okay, because I was aiming for a green-blue anyway. There's also some flecks of yellow in it which is not as obvious in the picture, but again, it's nice. The second thing I noticed, once I got it out of the packaging, was how wonderful soft it is. It was almost a shame to have to ball it up, but I did so finally. They're now safely tucked away in a Ziploc bag, awaiting the end of the Peacock Feathers Shawl.

Ahhhh, yes, and what of that? I finished up Chart 6 Friday night, then took a hard look at the next chart. 25 pattern rows, 50 rows total in Chart 7, before getting to the edging charts. I took a deep breath and plunged in, and managed to get 11 pattern rows of Chart 7 completed over the weekend. With a lot of determination and luck, I'm hoping to finish Chart 7 up by Saturday, leaving me a week or so to finish the edging.

I might have gotten more done on this, if it hadn't been for a trip out to run errands on Saturday that included a swing by commuKNITy. I signed up for the Shetland Lace class (10/1 & 10/8) and the Beginning Intarsia (10/28), then Emmy asked, "Is that all?" which prompted me to go around and look at yarn anyway. I had caught a glimpse of a note on the counter for Glampyre's One Skein Wonder, which had finally caught my interest last week, and I started wandering the store with half an eye towards yarn for that. I continue to be enamored of a Collinette ribbon-like yarn (whose brand name I forget) but at $23/skein and not enough yardage for the OSW, I sadly left it. What I wound up with was two skeins of Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Aran in a wonderful purple color (I think #607). I have half a mind to try making it to wear with a dress that I love except for it's lack of sleeves.

The PoA Hufflepuff continues to grow (and I need to take new status pictures so I can post all the pictures I've taken), and I'm halfway through the 10th repeat with four more to go after that. In preparation for it's near completion, I've balled up the yarn for the Slytherin scarf, and it now waits on the shelves along with the Tidepool and the Cashmerino.

I keep wondering when the crafting tide is going to ebb once more, leaving me poking at my projects idlely but with bored disinterest, and hoping that it won't happen, as I'm having a lot of fun right now, even for as much as I'm feeling slightly frazzled. I realize it's all self-imposed, and I just need to remember to pace myself properly.

06:55 am - Calvin Klein's got nothing on me
Two more rows done on Peacock Feathers and some small work done on the PoA scarf--I'm barely a day ahead of things on the latter now.

But, still, I continue to obsess about lace patterns.

[info]zog_knits's latest post had me finding the Forest Path Stole from the Summer 2003 IK, an entrelac project which, being lace, piqued my interest. I've never done entrelac, only heard of it as a technique, so now I'm curiously poking at it. Between that pattern and the Grecian Cowl Pullover which I really like the look of, I wound up buying both that issue and the Fall 2003 issue for the Byzantine Bazic, Cafe Bastille Cables, and the Leaf Coat.

If I ever do the Forest Path Stole, I also found a couple of tips pages:
    * IK Summer 2003 Corrections includes errata for the pattern
    * One persons tips-and-tricks for when she did Forest Path

That last link also a link to a Shetland lace pattern, Spider Queen, and someone else posted a real neat looking lace shawl pattern by the same designer as Spider Queen, Alcazar, the Moorish Palace, that totally put me in mind of the Middle East and therefore bellydance and therefore [info]ebonlock and [info]aelfsciene. And I'm whimpering over the Tempelhof Airlifter and Legends of the Shetland Seas shawls.

Window shopping is a perfectly acceptable past time.
